Coming Soon…. Fall!

I am not wishing my summer away. This year we bought pool passes for the first time and as the summer goes on, more and more of our friends have joined in. After a summer by the pool, I finally caved in to so many cute vintage and retro-style bikinis. I have never worn a bikini in my life, but the vintage cuts that many clothing lines have out this summer are so much more flattering! I picked up this high-waisted skirt style bottom and it covers all of the right (or I guess, wrong, in my eyes) parts. I feel curvy and those few inches of my torso that stick out have never seen the sun before. It feels so good.

Of course, the minute that I found the perfect bikini, the blazing hot weather went away. We’re back down into the 70’s with cool evenings that call for a jacket. It’s like the weather wants me to start shopping for fall clothes. While summer may be my favorite season for lounging, fall is definitely the best clothing season- boots, tights, dresses, cardigans, jackets. It’s “back to school” every year and you can try out new looks and new costumes, decide who you want to be all over again.

After my success with a vintage look bikini, I was excited when Shabby Apple contacted me and offered to let me try out their vintage clothing. The retro styles don’t show too much skin and with a fall wedding on my agenda for Labor Day weekend, I couldn’t turn down the At Last dress.

As a redhead, I’m a sucker for a green dress. The wedding’s in upstate New York, so I should look great in front of the fall leaves. And this vintage look is just right for being covered up at the ceremony and has a swingy skirt for dancing the night away.

After the wedding, I can wear it to the office with a cardigan and heels. Or, because I’m thrilled that 90’s styles are also on the radar for fall, I can pair it with my brown combat boots for a weekend look and dress it down with some chunky leather bracelets and a military style canvas bag.

Once it arrives, I’ll post some photos of a few different looks. I think this will quickly become a new staple in my wardrobe!

(Note- Shabby Apple is giving me a free dress in exchange for this post. No money was exchanged, nor was content reviewed before posting.)

Fall Shopping Spree

I can never figure out what I wore last year when it got cold. I dig through the bins of clothes and it seems like everything is just a bit ragged or too small or doesn’t match the few remaining pieces that still fit and don’t look like they spent the year in a moth colony (ok… I am a bit rough on clothes… let’s not blame moths). In order to get ready for the best time of the year, I splurged on some basics to jazz up the old wardrobe and mix in with the stuff that survived me all last winter.

This year, as always, I plan to spend all fall and most of winter in boots- I have three pairs (two black, one brown) of these motorcycle boots from Target. Yes, really. In genuine leather, they hold up like a dream and after two years, I’m just now having to re-sole them. Buy one half-size up for thick socks and enjoy. Also, if you have… ahem…. healthy-sized calves, these actually FIT. Buy all of them. I’ll probably buy two more pairs to hide away this year if the budget allows, just because I’m afraid that they’ll discontinue them one day and I will have to cry for the rest of my days. (Follow up- the boots are 16″ circumference at the top of the shaft, but stop just below the calf, shaft height-wise, for those of you who need numbers for fit. Since they don’t go over the calf, they fit great!).

My sister and I showed up on vacation and proved we are related by bringing along the same new  dress from Old Navy.

It wouldn’t feel like fall without lots of football on the agenda. I’m pretty stocked up on Steelers gear to celebrate the home team, but I picked up a pair of golden-yellow skinny jeans to wear with my jerseys and sweatshirts all season long.

And because the season officially begins when we all don some plaid for a certain Fall Party, I picked up a plaid skirt that will work with tights and boots all winter long. I may or may not have picked some back-up plaid choices… one can never be too prepared when it comes to plaid.

More Free Jeans!

There will be an update on life in the Well of Loneliness, but first, a good thing that happened:

I came home from the beach to a package- a giant skinny denim poster tube. And inside, I found these:

My own free brand new pair of Gap’s fall legging jeans. One size smaller than I’d usually buy. I decided to try them on anyway. And oh my goodness. They fit. Like a glove. They needed rolled up at the bottom, but I’m five feet tall and even the shorter lengths always need rolled up- it’s a problem I’m used to having. Now, keep in mind. I’m no hipster. For one, I’m 33 years old and while I like to think I’m pretty cool, I’m not young enough to be “hip” anymore. I have renter’s insurance, for Pete’s sake. Also, at five feet tall and “curvy” (to be gentle on myself), I am not generally a person who roams the earth in skinny jeans. But these, well, they’re just so comfortable. They feel like really soft, worn denim, but have enough stretch that I can flop on the couch in any contortion without the slightest desire to peel them off and hop back into my sweatpants. These are jeans that keep my pants on. I kid you not. And living alone, I don’t have to wear pants at home very often… ahem.

I love the freebies I get being part of the Brand Ambassador program at Gap. Especially when they’re things I might not usually buy for myself. These jeans have given me a reason to buy boots this fall. And man, I love boots. I look forward to fall just as an excuse to wear boots. Between my muscle-y calves and thick jeans though, buying boots can be a challenge. But now that I have these, I think this may just be the year I put boots on until spring. I really like them that much. And they don’t even have the usual fitted jeans downfall. The rise is low enough not to make me feel like my grandma, and high enough that there is NO MUFFIN TOP. It’s a jeans miracle in my world.

So, because the Gap loves you too, they sent along another free jeans certificate. All you have to do is comment below with one thing you’re looking forward to this fall (fashion-related or otherwise). The random number generator picks our winner. And those of you who entered last time, will get another entry just for coming around again. So, get on it. And be sure you post using an email that you actually check, so I can let you know you won. Your entry deadline is Friday, August 20th at noon EST.

Two Tote Bag Day

Two Tote Bag Day by eleanorstrousers featuring Nine West shoes

Some days, despite my better judgment, I end up with two tote bags. Today, it's because I have to pick up my CSA groceries after work and lug them home. This calls for commuter flip flops and office heels, plus something comfy to beat the 85 degree heat. And because I'm a super pale redhead, means that I need a little faux tan on the legs and a decent pedicure.

Sail Away With Me - Tuesday's outfit by eleanorstrousers featuring Nine West shoes

How addicted to playing with Polyvore am I? Let's just say that I may be skipping lunch to work up my next layout. I'm all nautical today because I'd rather be on a boat in the sunshine than in the office. And let's face it- because this stuff was all clean enough to put on my body this morning.

Inspired Style

Sometimes, a girl needs a makeover. And when I start to feel like a frump, I start with the classics. The ladies that make me sweat a little by pulling off the basics with style. The ones who spent a little time pulling it together so they could rip into the world with their teeth. My go-to broads?

Elizabeth Taylor as Maggie the Cat- sweaty, sultry, and naked-er in a knee-length slip than any porn star.

The penultimate girly beatnik- Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face- all black and jazzed.

Anais Nin – the gypsy writing her own rules – lovers, scandal, and a diary worth reading.

Trite and true, Coco Chanel dripping in pearls.

And for a modern girl, the fabulous Selma Blair in fishnets and bedhead.

It’s time to spend a little more time putting myself together- if nothing else, maybe I can fake it until I make it.

Today, I actually managed to stay home and do some work thanks to a crazy ice storm that left all of Pittsburgh encased in a sheet of slick glass this morning. I got up and dressed like a good little worker bee, opened the front door and saw shiny icy sidewalks as far as the eye could see. I tentatively trudged a block or so before I realized that it would be afternoon by the time I made it to the bus stop at that pace. Instead, I turned back, slid home, and let New Orleans know that I would be iced in until tomorrow. Because my new job is amazing, they said it was kosher and I have taken conference calls and emailed all day from the comfort of my dining room floor where I’ve propped the laptop and myself up on a pile of pillows. Because I had already gotten dressed for work, and then gave in, I’m in argyle work socks, polka dot pajama pants, a sweater set and pearls. Oh, and a giant white men’s terry cloth robe. Glamour, thy name is telework.
