I’m Having a Breakfast Baby

People of the world! Can we all agree on something now? That if you don’t know a woman is expecting, it is never ok to ask what she is having. Because I’m not. Having anything. At least not now. And I thought I looked really cute in this dress and boots today, but since you stopped me in the hallway with well-wishes, I’m wishing that I had added some Spanx to my wardrobe.

You see, I have a belly. An actually stomach that pooches out more than I’d like. A lot of women have them. I don’t work out or pretend that I’m doing anything to make it go away. Most days, my belly and I get along just fine. Maybe it’s the pleats in the dress or the way that I didn’t button my cardigan all the way down. Maybe it’s bloated from the delicious Danish that I had at breakfast. But now, it’s all I will think about today.

Instead of walking around feeling cute like I did when I left my house this morning, I’ll be hunched over for the rest of the day and sucking in my stomach and wishing I could just get home and hide in some giant T-shirt under a blanket where no one will look at me.

So, from now on, ask yourself… “Do I know this woman? Do I know that she is having a baby?” If not, “What are you having- a boy or a girl?” is not an appropriate good morning. And “I’m sorry,” when you’re corrected won’t make it right. Just hope you never run into me again. Because I will rub that belly of mine and next time when you ask what I’m having, my answer will be “Breakfast.”

‘Tis the Season to Give Back

I’ve had my tough times to be sure, but in general I am a very lucky girl. I have a job that I enjoy, a roof over my head, wonderful friends and family, and all of you out there making me laugh and sharing your fabulous internet selves with me.

On top of that, I got to be a Gap Brand Ambassador and throw a fantastic party and give away tons of free jeans and gift cards this summer to my friends and readers at a “Born to Fit” party. But after the party was done and the giveaways handled, I ended up with a few pairs of men’s jeans that no one I knew could fit into. I thought about passing them off to Goodwill, but brand new Gap jeans seemed too good for a donations box, just so some college student could buy them for $10 down the line.

And then I thought, where could I find some men who could really use these? My local veterans hospital is nearby and has several great programs: one to help homeless veterans turn their lives around, with on site housing, job training, the works. Many of the other patients have limited clothing when they arrive and could use something clean and nice other than hospital scrubs for job interviews and starting over. And the newly returning veterans have been wearing uniforms every day and would love some civilian wear.

I contacted my hook-up with the Gap and asked, just to keep the ol’ ethics clean, and got the green light. Today, these guys get an early Christmas.

If you have new or gently used clothing you would like to donate to clothe veterans in need (especially winter stuff and new socks, underwear, and t-shirts), you can find your local Veterans Affairs medical center here . The home page should list a contact for the voluntary services department who can tell you how you can help.

And remember our female Veterans as well! I didn’t have any women’s items to donate, but they would love donations for everyone who serves: young and old, male and female, and at any time of year. They can always use jeans, khakis, polos, and sweaters/ sweatsuits in any size.
